More New York Insurance Issues to Consider During Your Divorce

March 4, 2010
New York divorce
Your pending divorce is stressful enough, the last thing you want to do is come out of it without all of your insurance needs covered.  As you negotiate your way through the process, don’t let the issue of insurance slip through the cracks.  Be prepared to make adjustments in your New York Insurance for your health, auto and home policies.

If you are currently using the health insurance plan offered by your spouse’s employer, it may be time to look at other options.

  • Determine which plan is best suited for your children.  One of the spouses may have a health care plan that best suits the needs of the children.
  • Find out what your own employer offers or shop online for a health insurance policy.
  • You may qualify for COBRA, which provides health coverage during the transition period.
  • Consider buying a policy that will cover the cost of catastrophic medical emergencies.  It may not cover routine medical expenses but it will protect you from going without health insurance all together.

Divorce will also mean taking a look at your automobile insurance plan.

  • You may not qualify for the same coverage.  Talk to your agent if you have a package auto insurance plan and find out if the plan requires both spouses to reside at the same residence.
  • Contact your agent to be sure that you are the sole driver of the car.  Your current plan may have both the husband and wife on the policy.

You will have to take a close look at your homeowners insurance policy during the divorce proceedings.

  • The coverage will have to be adjusted once your home and all other property are divided during the divorce process.
  • A change in your home address will require a change in your homeowners insurance plan.
